Manufacturer Resound

Hearing Loss MildModerate
Features & Options Wind Noise SuppressionNoise ReductionSpeech Enhancement

Resound reinvents "open ear" product design with a device that can be discreetly popped into the ear to combine its own speech enhancing capabilities with the natural advantages of the ear's contours.

The be by Resound is an extremely convenient and cosmetic solution for wearer's with a mild to moderate high frequency hearing loss. It excels in terms of the naturalness of the sound quality and in its suppression of wind noise due to the unique placement of the microphone in the upper part of the bowl of the ear. Anyone who finds they are beginning to miss parts of conversation but want something that won't draw attention to itself should take a look at the be by Resound.

It's About Staying Young…

The Be by Resound is an ideal choice for someone with a mild to moderate hearing loss, especially someone with no previous experience of hearing enhancement or who has not got on with more conventional hearing devices, and is looking for a comfortably natural and cosmetic solution and doesn't need the features of more traditional hearing devices (such as a telecoil).

User Review

Reviewer's experience with product We have tried the be by Resound with a variety of wearers, including new users and experienced users, with varying degrees of hearing loss up to the recommended fitting range of the manufacturer, which is a moderate high frequency hearing loss.
Sound Quality The be by Resound is based on Resound's latest "Warp Technology", an extremely fast digital processor which enables it to manipulate the sound extremely quickly. This reduces the risk of any distortion to the sound quality, while increasing its ability to manipulate the sound to the wearer's preferences.
Cosmetics There are three checks that we generally use when we consider cosmetics. Firstly, is it noticeable if someone is face on to the the speaker, and the answer is no. The body of the device is tucked into the ear canal, and the microphone (which curls around the bowl of the ear) is generally masked by the tragus of the ear.

Secondly, can it be seen side on. And the answer is, yes... if someone is looking for it. However, it will vary depending on the shape of their ear. The body of the device is still generally hidden, even in smaller canals, thanks to its dark grey colouring which pretends to be the entrance of the ear canal. The microphone will be noticeable on some ears where the wearer doesn't have a deep bowl/concha... but even then, it's not obvious.

Thirdly, can it be seen from behind. No! It's all contained within the ear itself.

What has particularly surprised us is that people like the design so much, they've been taking it OUT of their ears to show people! Not what we expected!
How easy is it to handle? Most users will find the be straight forward to handle once they have worked out which way it should be held when inserting into the ear. On/off is simply by opening the battery drawer, which uses a size 10 (the smallest standard battery size), so this may prove fiddly for people with dexterity or eyesight problems.

Cleaning is straight forward, with a specially designed wax filter which simply pull off with the included tool. A new one is simply snapped back into place.
What's it like to wear? The majority of people we tried it with enjoyed wearing it because they weren't even aware they had it there. This is an incredible testimony to the design of it, because there is no custom element to it, yet Resound claim it will fit around 90% of ears.

Part of its secret is the wedge like shape which will allow it to be positions at varying depths in someone's canal so it rests at the point most comfortable for the wearer. The square-ish shape of the body is a stroke of inspiration. Most off-the-shelf devices are round, plug like designs. Not the be... it follows the square peg in a round hole idea with surprising success, meaning that there is always a free flow of air around the device on at least two sides, so it touches as little of the ear canal as possible.

Only narrower ears, some people will feel it slightly more occluding than, say, a slim-tube fitting.
What do you think would most improve this hearing instrument? What would most improve this hearing instrument is better interaction with the telephone. A number of users have found that the be whistles when a phone is put up to the ear, especially those users who have required a little more power or who have larger ear canals. Although in some cases the whistling can be improved by altering the position of the telephone to the ear, the be would benefit from stronger feedback suppression to handle this.
